The Appalachian Dream Center, a ministry of Operation Compassion, welcomes many people each year who come to Holden, in southern West Virginia, to show compassion to others - to help those who are less fortunate. These folks donate their time, energy and talents -  to feed the poor, give out food baskets, and work in a gift drive at Christmas, just to name a few.  Yes, there have been many...but none quite like Marisa Monbrod.  You see, Marisa is only 10 years old and has been diagnosed with Leukemia. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Marisa was given the opportunity to pick a special gift for herself.  She thought about traveling abroad, or swimming with dolphins - but this wonderful, selfless child, chose to use her "wish" to help others in Appalachia through the Appalachian Dream Center.

Marisa and her family arrived at the Dream Center in July, 2008, and worked there for 4 days.  Marisa was involved in making food baskets, feeding the hungry, and the highlight of the week for her was giving away toys and clothing to other children - children who couldn't afford to buy them. Appalachian Dream Center Director, Bishop Michael Hartwell, said he had never seen anything like it.  "Marisa is an inspiration to us all.  She gave to others without thinking about herself at all. It was truly from her heart. We were truly blessed to have Marisa and her parents as our guests."  The ADC is a ministry of the Verdunville Church of God where Hartwell is the Pastor. The church congregation welcomed the Monbrod family as they attended services there during the week. Prior to Marisa's coming the West Virginia, the church not only anticipated and planned for her arrival, they also prayed for her concerning her illness.

Yes, Marisa is an amazing child who knows she serves an amazing God!

One more fact about Marisa - she is currently in remission from her Leukemia!  Praise the Lord!
